Supporting same-sex marriage, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut recently stated that people’s preferences do not matter when their “hearts are one”. She further described marriage as a “bond of love”.
During a press interaction in Haridwar on Sunday, Ranaut expressed her view that marriage is about love and connection between two individuals, regardless of their sexual preferences. Her statement was appreciated by Apurva Asrani, the co-writer of her 2017 film ‘Simran’, who thanked the actor for speaking up in support of “marriage equality”. Asrani, who is openly gay, stated that most movie stars have been hesitant to speak out on the issue, making Ranaut’s statement all the more important.
As the debate over same-sex marriage continues in India, a five-judge constitution bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices SK Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, PS Narasimha, and Hima Kohli is currently hearing arguments on a batch of petitions seeking legal validation for same-sex marriages.
Ranaut’s statement is significant, as it reflects a growing trend of support for same-sex marriage in India. The actress is known for her outspoken opinions on social and political issues, and her stance on this matter is sure to have a positive impact on the conversation surrounding same-sex marriage in the country.
