Aishwarya Rai Reflects on Playing Nandini in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam: A Very Special Role

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, one of Bollywood’s most talented actresses, has recently opened up about her experience playing the iconic character Nandini in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 1999 romantic musical Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and her upcoming role in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: 2.

In a promotional event for the latter film, Aishwarya spoke about the special connection she has with the name Nandini, and how playing strong, layered female characters has been a blessing for her career.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is considered to be one of the most iconic Bollywood films of all time, and Aishwarya’s portrayal of the character Nandini is often cited as one of her best performances. At the promotional event for Ponniyin Selvan: 2, Aishwarya reflected on the impact the character has had on her life and career.

Nandini’s Impact on Aishwarya and the Audience

“What a coincidence. It’s amazing na? Even Nandini in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was very very memorable. She has lived on people’s heart and I’m so so thankful that I got to play Nandini then too. She had remained special to the audience and, of course, to me,” Aishwarya said.

The Importance of Playing Strong Female Characters

Aishwarya also spoke about the importance of playing strong, layered female characters in her career. “That’s just tremendously a blessing, to have gotten to play such strong women, such layered women and women with character that touch the lives of so many women out there. There’s a relatability and I am very, very grateful,” she said.

Aishwarya’s upcoming film, Ponniyin Selvan: 2, is based on the historical novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The film, directed by Mani Ratnam, is set to be released in two parts and features an ensemble cast including Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, and Jayam Ravi.
