Dil Bechara a huge hit on Disney+Hotstar

Disney+ Hotstar registered record-breaking viewership numbers for the premiere of Dil Bechara

Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara is estimated to have garnered a record viewership of 70-100 million in the first three days of its premiere on Disney+Hotstar. The film was watched by 95 million viewers in the first 24 hours of its release.

Dil Bechara is the final film of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s career. The actor died by suicide on June 14, before it had been announced that the film would release only on Disney+ Hotstar, and not in theatres. His fans protested but turned up on the streaming platform nonetheless. The film was made available for free to both subscribers and non-subscribers.

Directed by Mukesh Chhabra Dil Bechara premiered on Disney+Hotstar on July 24. It was Sushant’s last project Shailesh Capoor, CEO at Ormax Media, who estimates the AVOD (advertisement-based video on demand) segment makes up about 40%-60% of Hotstar’s user base.

 An apples-to-apples comparison with a theatrical release, however, is not possible. For instance, if the average ticket price in India is taken as Rs 100, then Dil Bechara would have made Rs 950 crore. According to a report, the average ticket price across PVR Cinemas theatres in India in 2019 was Rs 207, which pushes the estimated box office earnings of Dil Bechara to around Rs 2000 crore.

According to our tracking research, the interest in the film and awareness about it is, in fact, higher than for any other OTT show or film released during the lockdown; Kapoor told FE. Gulabo Sitabo which premiered on subscription-based platform Amazon Prime Video is understood to have garnered a viewership of about 20-30 million over a month.
